FLORENCE, Ill. (WGEM) -

Repairs to the closed Florence Bridge are expected to begin shortly after January 1, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.

IDOT District 6 Bridge Engineer Steve Beran says that crews from Midwest Foundation Corporation have arrived on site and are erecting scaffolding to begin repairs within the next couple of weeks.

Some fabricated materials are still in route from Kansas City.

The Florence Bridge was closed unexpectedly in mid-June after finding structural issues in the bridge during a routine inspection. Beran says IDOT is still on schedule to have the bridge reopened by the spring planting season.
