Several recent fires over the past few days in the area have taken place in apartments, with some people losing everything they have. But there is a way to protect your belongings even if you rent.
Renter's insurance covers your personal property in the event of a fire, severe storm or even theft. State Farm agent Melissa Bradshaw says most policies will also pay for limited stay in a hotel. Renter's insurance is usually under $10 a month, but can save you thousands.
"And you carry, say $30,000 in renters insurance. We're not just going to give them $30,000," Bradshaw said. "Claims is going to ask that they document what they have and what they've lost. It's so much easier if you have like a video that you can show."
Bradshaw says to make sure the policy covers everything, like jewelry and other valuables, because not all of them do.
