HONOLULU, Hawaii. (WGEM) -- Luke Guthrie hit a rough patch in his start to the 2013 PGA Tour season.
But he's got plenty of time to make up for it.
The Quincy native bogeyed two of his first three holes en route to a 2-over 37 on the front nine during his first round at the Sony Open.
His up-and-down day continued on the back nine but he rebounded to post birdies on three of the final five holes he played and fired a 1-over par 71.
Guthrie watched as his playing partners caught fire.
Former Illini teammate Scott Langley carded an 8-under 62 to grab the clubhouse lead and Russell Henley opened with a 7-under 63 to finish one stroke off the pace.
Guthrie is a tie for 88th place heading into Friday's second round.
