Quincy, IL (WGEM)-- Like it or not, tax season is upon us and the IRS will start accepting income tax returns January 30th. And if you need help filing there's some free assistance out there.
Starting January 23rd, the United Way of the Mark Twain Area will begin taking appointments for its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.
They've expanded their locations this year with seven offices open in Hannibal, Palmyra, Monroe City, LaBelle, and Canton. Last year they helped more than 250 families. This year their goal is 500.
An expert will help guide you through the filing process if you meet the income requirements...families who make less than 50 thousand dollars and individuals who make less than 25 thousand.
"We're not taking any business away from anyone we're simply helping those who perhaps maybe would not get a tax return done. But really anyone with or family with an income of 50 thousand dollars or under we're ready to help you,' said Lou Lemen, the Executive Director of the Mark Twain United Way.
Volunteers are not able to prepare returns for business, farm, rental, or partnership income; complex capital gains or losses; or the sale of property or itemization.
The United Way of Adams County is also offering free tax help.
