Stepping Up: Berhorst's leadership helps guide unbeaten Tigers

(WGEM) -- The Canton Tigers are the last team standing in the boys Tri-State basketball with a perfect record, and along the way have had some close calls.

"I think we've been tested a lot here lately, and we've handled it very well," said Canton head coach Andy Anderson.

Anderson's team has talent, experience, and depth that has worked toward an unbeaten record, but a bigger key to this surge could be growth in leadership from junior forward Brandon Berhorst.

"Brandon does all of the dirty work, the loose balls, the rebounds," Anderson told WGEM Sports.

"He always guards the other teams best offensive perimeter player, and he does all the toughness for us, and he just does a great job effort wise."

Berhorst can fill up the stat sheet, but his unselfish attitude toward his teammates might be a bigger attribute.

"They definitely want to get better, I want them to get better so we can be a better team all around," said Berhorst.

"I think when I motivate them it motivates me back."

While Berhorst has always brought the physical tools to succeed on a nightly basis, it wasn't until he took a more vocal approach that his teammates started to follow.

"He brings toughness to our team, there's no doubt about that, and his effort every day in practice is where he shows the other guys how you're supposed to play with effort," Andy Anderson expressed.

"I told him I wanted him to be more vocal and kind of get after guys, because they should respect him because of the way he plays."

Berhorst took that advice and it has shown.

"What I look at is not necessarily to pick up myself, but motivate other people to be better, and play their best every night, and we usually get that out of it."
