(WGEM) -- Fans and historians in the game of baseball describe Stan Musial using just two words, 'The Man'.

Sadly, the greatest St. Louis Cardinals player to ever dawn the birds on the bat has died.

The three time Most Valuable Player passed away on Saturday evening surrounded by family according to the Cardinals organization.

Musial won seven National League batting titles and played a key role in three World Series championships.

The news spread quickly at Saturday's Cards Caravan at John Wood and a moment of silence was held in his honor..local fans remembered Musial in their own words.

"We're all sad here but (Musial) was a great Cardinal player and supporter and he'll be dearly missed," said Mike Libmann.

Stan was the man. I remember when I was just a young kid he was the man, he was what I knew about baseball," added Doug Weese.

"Probably one of the greatest baseball players ever. He was good for the fans, good for baseball, and I think the whole world is gonna miss him," expressed Jim Young.
