Local elementary school gets a lesson in African drumming

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -

Some kids in Quincy got an introduction into African drumming today from traveling music teacher Fonziba Koster.

Fonziba lead a drum assembly for every class today at Monroe Elementary. She not only taught percussion, but also answered questions about what life is like in Africa.

Fonziba says African drumming is a powerful thing for kids to learn for many reasons.

"It's a great thing for building self-esteem, it's a great team work. Very good for the 21st century employability skills, where they have to work together as a group. Where they have to team work...very important," said Koster.

After the drumming the kids went into the hallway to see a display of items that they use in a typical African home.

Fonziba will be at Madison Elementary tomorrow.
