Sidewalk Construction Changes get major support

HANNIBAL, Mo. (WGEM) -

There's a new plan for sidewalk construction in downtown Hannibal.  It calls for eliminating two tiered sidewalks and railings while raising the intersections at Bird and Main and Center and Main.

The city is making changes after businesses objected to what they saw after the first phase of construction was completed.  The Hannibal District Development Commission voted to eliminate the two-tiered sidewalk because it wasn't safe.

"To me it looked a little awkward to be walking on it. If you weren't paying attention you might be looking in a store, window shopping as you're walking and there could've been a possibility of stepping off," said Chairman Michael Kettelkamp.

City Engineer Mark Rees says even with these changes, the project could cost less than the originally projected $250,000.
