US 61 reopened in Hannibal and near Palmyra

HANNIBAL, Mo. (WGEM) -

Southbound lanes of US 61 are back open in two locations in Northeast Missouri.

MoDOT reopened US 61 at 400 Highway, just in front of the O'Reilly's Auto Parts store, just before 6 p.m. The road was closed around 1:30 p.m. for a jackknifed semi truck.

Traffic is also once again moving in southbound lanes of US 61 just south of Palmyra. The road was shut down for several hours due to another accident.

The closures, along with several cars drifting off the roadways, backed up traffic for miles Thursday. Drivers attempted to help each other get back on the roadways.

"And then the next truck came through and he just buried us, and there's at least three feet of snow on my car...so I'm stuck for a while. Guess I'll call Triple A," one stranded driver told WGEM News.
