Keokuk family reopens bakery six months after loss in their family

An iconic bakery in Keokuk reopened Thursday, six months after the loss of the shop's owner in a tragic car accident.

Now, the children have taken over Stan's Pastry Shop to continue their mother's legacy.

Madonna Kirchner says they have been so busy on their first day back that the customers are pre-ordering for a day ahead already, and customers say they miss it and our glad it's reopened.

"I guess the God above said he had something special for me to do," said Kirchner.

And that special thing to do is running her mother Lois Waldron's bakery after she was killed in a vehicle accident last October.

Kirchner and her husband Richard were in the vehicle with her mother when she died and says the journey back to Thursday's reopening hasn't been easy.

"We cried a lot and we scrubbed a lot and we just got it going," said Kirchner.

And customers who came in to get their favorite treats on Thursday when they heard word that Stan's opened back up say the business has been missed.

"It means a lot to have a bakery you can go in and out of without really having to go to a grocery store," said customer Gary Thorn.

"I think you can see by the line of customers that everyone is glad we are back open here," said customer Wally Winkler.

And those loyal customers say it's been too long since they've had the bakery's famous cream horns.

"Their favorite cream horns is what I miss," said Thorn.

"They're light and sweet and I think they are good for you," said Winkler.

Kirchner says she will continue the tradition her parents started in 1967 in Keokuk.

Although Kirchner wouldn't reveal the recipe to their famous cream horns, she did reveal one secret ingredient of their success.

"I think it is just the love that we try to share with everybody," said Kirchner.

Stan's Pastry Shop is opened on Thursdays and Fridays from 6 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Saturdays 6 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.
