UPDATE: Lafferty resigns claiming he was torn between two places

CARTHAGE, Ill. (WGEM) -- Claiming the decision was family driven, and that he was torn between two places, Tim Lafferty stepped down Tuesday as Illini West football coach after two seasons.

Lafferty told WGEM Sports he did so strictly for personal reasons.

Lafferty, the reigning People's Choice for WGEM Coach of the Year, took over for Hall of Fame head coach Jim Unruh in 2011.

Lafferty had an overall of record of 13-8 which included a pair of postseason appearances.

He says he's not retiring by any means adding that he feels he could coach another 15 years.

Lafferty is also open to returning to serve as an assistant coach if the new head coach would agree to his fluid schedule.
