Lightning to blame for overnight house fire

The severe storms not only caused damage to buildings and trees across the area, but ignited a house fire overnight.

Firefighters were called to a home at 1315 Locust street for reports of a fire and heavy smoke around 12:45 Thursday morning. According to Quincy Assistant Fire Chief Tom Bentley, a vent pipe that lead to the bathroom was struck by lightning and started the fire.

Bentley says the fire was contained, but there is some water damage to the attic and bathroom.

The homeowner is out of town.
