Flood fight continues along Illinois River; Mississippi continues to recede

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -

Volunteers continue to strengthen levees along the Illinois River as the cresting waters make their way downstream.

Crews continued to fill sandbags and reinforce levees in Pike and Scott counties Thursday, as near record crests are expected this weekend.

Sandbagging continues in Pike County, at the Danny Myers farm east of Perry on County Road 5. In Scott County, sandbaggers can help at the Bloomfield site, two miles south of the I-72 Bluffs exit on Route 100.

Nearly all roads in the WGEM viewing area that were previously close have reopened. Roads still closed include:

  • Clark County: U.S. 61 at Alexandria.
  • Schuyler Co.: IL 100 at Fredrick.

The Adams County Emergency Management Agency is collecting reports of flood related damages. Those claims must be reported by Friday, April 26. If you have information, you can call 217-277-2505 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Financial assistance may also be available for some flood victims in southeast Iowa.

The Red Cross is in national disaster mode and a spokesperson said financial donations are needed.

"We don't know how much money we will need, but based on past floods, we know it will be significant," said Erin Miller, a Red Cross spokesperson.

Miller said those wishing to donate money can call 1-800-Red-Cross or go to www.RedCross.org/donate.

Miller said the Red Cross is also prepared to provide shelters should flood victims need a place to stay.
