CANTON, MO. (WGEM) -- You may not know it, but Culver-Stockton Lady Wildcat head basketball coach Melissa Young also holds down head coaching duties for the St. Louis Surge, the only professional women's basketball team in the city, who are set for it's second season coming up in may.

The Surge reside the WBCBL, which is similar to the NBA's D-League, and they held an open practice on Sunday afternoon at Charles Fieldhouse in Canton, where the teams owner Khalia Collier was in attendance.

She says the rise of semi-pro hoops in St. Louis has much bigger ambitions than the interest it has generated on the court.

"So as we kind of create a buzz in St. Louis, we're the first women's team there in over 20 years, so there's just a natural excitement overall," Collier told WGEM Sports.

"This is the first time you get to see professional role models and mentors in the community from a female stand point."

"The ultimate goal is to start a WNBA team in the city of St. Louis, so that would be, I just think, awesome for the kids in the area," added Surge head coach Melissa Young.
