MACOMB, Ill. (WGEM) -- The individual accomplishments, both on and off the golf course, of Bryce Carper and Idol Mitchell reads like a novel.
From academic achievements to their steady prowess on the links the two have exemplified the true meaning of student athletes.
Fittingly together, the best friends signed their national letters of intent on Wednesday afternoon. Carper made his commitment to Western Illinois while Mitchell joins former Bomber teammate Brodie Dakin at Webster University.
As for Carper, he's ready to roll with the Leathernecks.
"It's a dream come true," Carper said.
"It's what I've been working for since I started golfing and it really became a reality my sophomore year when I realized I had the talent to continue after high school. I'm glad it's finally here, it's a great day."
Both players say it was their goal to play college golf but Mitchell admits he wasn't sure a day like this would ever come.
Like Carper, Mitchell was a co-captain and helped lift Macomb to a sectional appearance last fall.
He hopes to carry that momentum to the college level.
"I used to just play for fun but then I started to get competitive and started playing in Quincy, and I said, 'All right, I want to play college golf,'" Mitchell explained.
"I kept playing, pushing myself, and practicing hard. I talked to the coach down at Webster and he's an awesome guy and it's an awesome golf program, and I said, 'All right, I can do this.'"
Mitchell and Carper were both two-time state qualifiers and earned multiple All-Conference honors during their four year careers.
