CARTHAGE, Ill. (WGEM) -- More than 250 special needs student athletes competed as champions Thursday in Carthage.
It was all part of the Courageous Smiles Track and Field meet at Illini West High School. Physically and mentally disabled students participated in dozens of events. From the standing long jump and hula-hooping to more traditional track events, organizers say it's about making these kids feel good about themselves.
Carroll Hickenbottom is one of the organizers. He says, "Anything we can to get them involved. Everyone goes home a winner when we're finished. Everyone gets a medal to take home."
The Knights of Columbus sponsor the event. This is the 15-th year for the Courageous Smiles track and field competition.
