Crews will get back to work Tuesday on Hannibal's downtown sidewalk project. Construction was halted last year after business owners objected to the split level sidewalks fearing people would get hurt. So the city came up with a new plan this winter. Preliminary work began Monday on connecting storm sewers at the intersection of Bird and Main street. Starting Tuesday morning, that intersection will be closed to traffic. Project manager, Brian Chaplin said this work is necessary to complete the sidewalk project.
"Storm Sewer's the first step. Once it's done we'll start tearing sidewalks out. We're going to keep the East side of the sidewalk in as long as we can for foot traffic and the businesses," he said.
The entire construction project in the downtown area is expected to last through much of the tourism season.
