An eye sore in downtown Fort Madison will soon be gone as demolition begins on buildings damaged by fire six months ago.
Crews are tearing down the buildings near 6th Street and Avenue G.
The computer repair store Cure Solutions and The Book Nook were the only two active businesses on that block at the time of the fire.
During the demolition, a beam fell into the street and one lane of traffic had to be closed.
But officials say overall, the clean-up process has been quick.
"A lot of the cities, they burn buildings down this big downtown they're there for a year or years so to get it done within six months that's a speedy process we've had," Fort Madison Fire Chief Joey Herren.
Chief Herren says demolition should be done sometime next week, but there's no word yet on plans for the lot.
