We continue honoring area educators with our WGEM Golden Apple Awards. We're recognizing a principal who dedicates her life to making her school and community the best it can be.
Pollee Craven's 140 Griggsville-Perry Middle School students were on their feet when we presented her with a Golden Apple.
"This was a big surprise. I had no idea," Craven said.
Craven was moved to tears during the school assembly designed to honor her work. She's in her sixth year as principal at the 5th through 8th grade middle school, and spent the previous 14 years as a teacher.
"It's kids and seeing them succeed. Believing they can do whatever they set their mind to. That's the best part," Craven said.
Dozens of nomination letters pointed out the countless ways Mrs. Craven gives to her students and her community. She's implemented PBIS at the middle school and started an after school homework help program for students struggling in the classroom. Mrs Craven also organizes a Christmas food drive and helped raise money for Honor Flight, just to name a few.
"I've never met anybody like Mrs. Craven. So I thought she was very deserving of this," G-P Special Education Teacher Genny Stauffer said.
"She's never negative. She's always positive and she always has the answer to a question," G-P 8th Grade student Shannon Mountain said. "She always comes to all the school fundraisers that she doesn't even have to."
"This is my community and it has been my whole life. And I think when you have a community you just do those things without even thinking about it," Craven said.
