HANNIBAL, Mo. (WGEM) -- Mark Thomas has been waiting for the right opportunity.
A chance to call a basketball program his own.
After assistant roles at Van-Far, and most recently Troy, Thomas is getting his first crack as a head coach.
Two weeks after being named the new leader at Hannibal, Thomas was introduced to the media on Thursday afternoon.
He's not entirely focused on the Pirates record his first season but rather steady improvement from practices to games.
Thomas wants to play up-tempo and solid defense, and says he can't wait to get acclimated to his surroundings.
"I'm glad this opportunity came open when it did because I think this is going to be a good fit for me. I've done some other interviews and head coaching things prior to this, but I think (Hannibal) is the right fit," Thomas indicated.
"I'm not going to measure myself on wins and losses in the first season, I'm going to measure ourselves on have we built relationships with the kids, and have we shown improvement every day in practice? The wins will come at that point. If the kids learn to trust you and they buy in to what we're trying to (teach), the wins will come."
Thomas plans to spent plenty time at the lower levels as well.
He feels the more he can work with the younger kids, the better Hannibal will be in the long run.
