The Keokuk Farmers Market kicks off its 2013 season Saturday.
Hours run from 7-11 a.m. at the River City Mall parking lot.
For the first time, the Farmers Market will sponsor a special pumpkin growing and decorating contest for all ages. Judging will be held on Saturday, October 12.
"We will have to major categories," said Manager Julie Knoche. "One category will be the heaviest pumpkin by weight with two divisions; 12 years of age and under and over 12 years. The other division will be a pumpkin decorating contest with two divisions; under 12 years of age and 12-18 years of age."
Knoche reports that the heaviest pumpkin contest will be judged strictly on total weight of the pumpkin and a stem no longer than 1 inch. All pumpkins must be free of holes or punctures and not be altered in any unnatural way.
There is a $15 entry fee for the heaviest pumpkin contest, and $2 for the pumpkin decorating contest.
