Hundreds of families coming to Quincy for state tumbling championships

More than 1,000 people from across the region are coming to town for the AAU Illinois State Tumbling Championship.

Friday, crews were busy setting up trampolines and mats inside the Oakley Lindsay Center.

This is the second year Gem City Gymnastics and Tumbling has hosted the event featuring hundreds of tumblers.

Organizers say each young athlete is expected to bring in four to five family members, meaning big money for the local economy.

"We have host hotels, we have a big program that has restaurants advertised. It's great for the community. And it lets people in the community see something they don't normally get to see. Not very many people know about the sport of tumbling,"said Katie Cernea, co-owner of Gym City Gymnastics and Tumbling.

The competition gets started at 8 a.m. Saturday.

The winners of each age group qualify for the Junior Olympics.
