QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -- Gem City Gymnastics hosted the AAU Trampoline and Tumbling State Championship this weekend at the Oakley Lindsay Center.

More than 300 boys and girls competed for a bid to the Junior Olympic games later this year.

Coaches say the benefits of tumbling are endless.

"Not only learning how to flip, but it also develops some strength and some body awareness that really transfers well to other athletics," said assistant coach Casey Francis.

"It's nice because unlike other team sports, it is an individual sport and a lot of pressure is just on the athlete," added Zeke Cernea, co-owner of Gem City Gymnastics.

"I think it's really enriching just as far as self-confidence, believing in yourself, working hard, work ethic. It's great."

Saturday marked the second time Quincy has hosted the AAU Championships, which included over 700 events.

All of the qualifiers will be moving on to the national competition in late July held in Detroit Michigan.
