The oldest active EMT in the state of Illinois is serving right here in the Tri-States.
85-year-old Josephine Burkey with the Brown County Ambulance Service was presented with a service award today.
Burkey works on the basic life support ambulance helping take care of patients and is still on call 80-plus hours a week.
Burkey was on the first ambulance run in Brown County in 1974.
She says she's glad she still gets to help people every single day.
"I just enjoy doing it. I always wanted to be a nurse and I did graduate as an LPN when I was 47 years old. Then I went and worked at the hospital in Rushville and retired from there. But I just kept this up," said Burkey.
Burkey was honored at the Camp Point golf course during the annual emergency responders golf outing celebrating EMS week.
