QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -- One of the best morning's of the year occurred Thursday as ESPN 1440's WGEM Sportscenter handed out its 5th annual Honda/Hyundai's Jason Deters Prep Athletes of the Year awards.
This year's recipients, both three sport standouts, are West Hancock's Austin Hardy and Monroe City's Carly Spalding.
Hardy says winning the award is a fantastic way to finish his high school career.
"It's a great honor (considering) the list of kids that I had to compete with. It's a huge honor because any one of them deserve it as much as I do," Hardy indicated.
"Throughout the whole year football was (better) than the last few years, and then in basketball we had a great run in to sectionals, and to cap it off with in a baseball regional title and sectional appearance was really nice, and a great way to end my senior year."
Hardy is heading to Monmouth College and will play baseball.
Both Hardy and Spalding, who's out of town and was unable to attend the festivities, receive $500 scholarships courtesy of Honda/Hyundai's Jason Deters.
