Hannibal held its first Flag day and veteran ceremony in honor of all those who served.
The Elks Lodge held a presentation of the flag along with the pledge of allegiance and a prayer. Veterans spoke during the event including Klaus (klouse) Stendebach (sten-da-bach), a veteran of the U.S. military who was born in Germany during Hitler's reign. Flag day means one thing to Stendebach.
"It's the freedom, that people fought for you as I said in my poem. It makes you feel free. That is what this country stood for and that is what the flag stands for."
The ceremony was followed by a pulled pork luncheon for the veterans courtesy of the Elks Lodge.
