MACC to open new Hannibal campus, including storm shelter, next spring

A new community college campus in Hannibal is set to open next spring, with an added layer of protection.

Moberly Area Community College is building a 16,000 square foot facility near the corner of Shinn Lane and MM.  The expansion was needed as enrollment outgrew its current facility.

The new building will feature classrooms, labs, a library, student commons area, and can also be used as a storm shelter.

The Affordable Community Education group says they've raised nearly $1 million through donations from local businesses and individuals.  Affordable Community Education Board member Sally Poole said this expansion will be a big boost to Northeast Missouri.

"I think an education lifts the boats of everybody in the whole region. It's going to make a really powerful difference economically and I think it will benefit the entire region a lot," Poole said.

Poole said the storm shelter can hold more than 1,800 people.
