EAST PEORIA, Ill. (WGEM) - Quincy's WGEM-TV received extensive honors at the Illinois Broadcasters Association's annual awards banquet held at the Embassy Suites Hotel in East Peoria Wednesday night.
WGEM News was nominated as a finalist for eight awards over dozens of other entries from stations throughout Illinois.
The highlight of the night was a First Place Silver Dome Award for "WGEM News This Week." The local news and issues program airs Saturdays at 6 p.m. and is hosted by WGEM's Matt Schmidt.
"Localism is our top priority, said Chad Mahoney, WGEM News Director. "WGEM News This Week's long-form format allows us to closely examine important issues in the Tri-States. We're able to offer depth with this program that isn't possible with the time constraints of a standard newscast. Receiving an award such as this only motivates our journalists to work harder to better inform our viewers."
The particular show honored featured interviews and background stories on the successful Great River Honor Flight program that has flown over 580 local WWII and Korean veterans to Washington to see their memorials.
WGEM's work with Toys for Tots earned the station another First Place Silver Dome in the category of "Best Television Public Service Announcement." The announcement was produced by Shawn Dickerman and Dan Reinhard.
The station also took home awards in several other categories: Best Sports Story, Best Hard News Story, Best Spot News Coverage, Best TV Station Self-Promotion, Best Community Service Activity and Best TV Website.
"The strength of WGEM News provides us with a megaphone for the communities we serve and we work hard to put the reach that gives us to the best use possible," said Carlos Fernandez, WGEM Vice-President and General Manager.
"We believe it is our duty to not only provide local news coverage, but to also inform our audience about important charitable needs in the community. We're honored to see our work with programs such as Great River Honor Flight and Toys for Tots recognized with these awards."
