FORT MADISON, IA. (WGEM) -- Lew Montgomery gave his heart and soul on Saturday afternoons as a member of the Iowa football team, and now he needs your help.

Kinnick South in Fort Madison is a place where Hawkeye fans have always come together to support their team.

On Saturday the community will unite there for a much bigger reason, in an attempt to raise money for 15 year old Lucas Montgomery, who was diagnosed with Sanfilippo B MPS at age 5.

MPS is a life threatening disease, that is still without a cure.

"It is debilitating, and as a child he started as a healthy individual," said Kristi Quittem, a friend of the family and co-organizer of the event.

"Stacey and Lew thought they had a healthy baby boy, and it wasn't until he was around five that they noticed some of his motor skills were depleting. He wasn't able to do all that he was doing before, and they didn't understand why."

Lucas was diagnosed with the disease shortly thereafter, which causes loss of motor skills, speech, and causes progressive damage to the body.

Lucas's father is former Hawkeye running back Lew Montgomery.

His mother Stacey graduated from Fort Madison high school, and both parents made lasting impressions to those willing to help now, in their time of need.

"We are trying to raise at least $5,000 for wheelchair accessibility in their home, a lift for the shower, bathroom usage, and just try to make his life a little more comfortable for him," said Kelly Phelan.

"I asked Stacey if there was any way we could have Lew and some of his buddies from the University of Iowa from his era come down and do autographs and pictures and thought it would be a great way to raise money and make this happen."

The road ahead won't be easy, but every effort, no matter how big or small, is a step closer to a light at the end of the tunnel.

"The community has been awesome in their willingness to give a monetary donation to the event, and we're hearing that there's going to be quite a crowd since we have some pretty good name Iowa Hawkeye's coming down," Phelan added.

"So we've heard from word of mouth that it's going to be a pretty good event."

'Fun(d) For Lucas' will get underway at 2 o'clock PM tomorrow at Kinnick South which is at 1310 14th Street in Fort Madison.

Along with autographs from former Hawkeyes Tim Dwight, Lew Montgomery, Matt Hugher, Mark Mitchell, and Edward Saidat, there will be a live auction with several items up for bid beginning at 4 o'clock.

Donations can also be sent to Fort Madison Bank and Trust Benefit for Lucas Montgomery, P.O. Box 329, Fort Madison, IA 52627.
