Volunteers clean up Bear Creek in Hannibal after spring flooding leaves debris

HANNIBAL, Mo. (WGEM) -

Spring flooding has caused a lot of debris to fill the waterways here in the tri-states, and Saturday volunteers were out trying to clean up the mess.

A couple dozen volunteers came out to pick up trash Saturday morning at Bear Creek.

The 1819 Hannibal Stream Team hosted the event.

The group was formed last year to help protect Hannibal's many waterways.

And Organizers say they've had to push back the event because of heavy rains this spring.

"We had actually had this scheduled twice this year, but because of high flood water we had to cancel so today this is a rescheduled date and we've had a great turnout so far," said Tina Bartz of the Hannibal Department of Public Works.

The Hannibal Parks and Recreation Department will host a Mississippi River clean-up in October.
