Western Illinois has six quarterbacks on the roster to start the 2013 season, and head coach Bob Nielson won't rush to name a starter prior to the Necks week one match-up with Hampton.
MACOMB, Il. (WGEM) -- Throughout the first week of practice Western Illinois first year head coach Bob Nielson has guaranteed very little when it comes to locking down a depth chart for his young team.
That's especially true at the quarterback position which remains a question mark in Macomb.
As of now, it looks like a three horse race between sophomore Hayden Northern, who saw action in the last four games of 2012, along with redshirt freshman J'Vaughn Williams and Cincinnati transfer Trenton Norvell who all appear to be on equal footing as camp Leatherneck rolls on.
"We're still really young when you look at that position, even with the new guys that we brought in," Nielson expressed.
"We've got one guy out of six that's played college football, and he hasn't played very much."
Nielson is known for an offense that revolves around a strong running game, and has the luxury of senior Nikko Watson in the backfield, who is coming off of a 1,000 yard season.
Watson, who will be a relied on heavily to produce in Nielson's system, is confident that this group of signal callers will be ready when it's time to name a starter.
"Whoever is at the quarterback spot, I know we're going to be good," he said.
"We have a lot of good quarterbacks, and whoever starts, I know they're going to have to be good to start."
Bob Nielson also expressed that he hopes a clear cut starter will emerge in time for Western's week one match-up with Hampton, but wouldn't dismiss the chances of multiple quarterbacks seeing action in the early part of the schedule.
