MACOMB, Ill. (WGEM) -- The countdown to the season opener for the Western Illinois football program is down to only 20 days.
For senior captain and QND alum Jimmy Holtschlag game one can't come soon enough.
The preseason All-MVFC offensive lineman has seen the good times - starting seven games at guard during the Leathernecks playoff run in his redshirt freshman season.
Holtschlag has witnessed the difficult days - a combined five wins the last two years.
But this fall could be different with a new head coach and heightened expectations.
"I want that (championship) ring," he told WGEM Sports.
"I haven't had one and it's a dream of mine to have. If nothing else I'd love to have that ring."
Holtschlag knows that goal won't come easy but he says the new look Leathernecks have are off to a strong start.
"There's a lot of people that don't believe. But we're on this field, we're putting in the work, and we've got the talent and the coaches. As long as we keep working to put it together, I really do believe that's a realistic goal."
Holtschlag is also extremely successful in the classroom having earned Academic All-American or All-Conference awards all four years in Macomb.
