QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -- While the West Virginia Miners were making a near 11-hour road trip to Quincy on Friday the Gems used their off day for a light practice at QU Stadium - the scene of Saturday's Prospect League Championship Series opener.

The Gems will give the ball to Western Illinois sophomore Aaron Michel in game one.

Michael, who just rejoined the team a couple days after being away with family, wasn't sure if he would be back at all this season.

After receiving a message from manager Chris Martin, Michel joined the team prior to Wednesday's game at Danville.

Michel was picked up along the way by the team bus.

"For them to text me and say 'Hey can we pick you up on the way?' I was like, 'Yeah definitely, pick me up,'" Michel told WGEM Sports.

"We get there and it was a great game pitched by Brady (Arenson). Then they had a lefty coming up in the ninth, and they decided to call on me. I was feeling it the other day, so hopefully I'm feeling it (Saturday)."

Quincy catcher Mike Wilson, who will catch Michel, couldn't be happier to see the pitching staff have one of it's top arms ready for the opener.

"Getting Aaron back was huge because our pitching staff has kind of been depleted," Wilson said.

"I have confidence in our entire pitching staff but I have the utmost confidence in Aaron that's he's going to go out there and throw a great game."

For all of the Gems players a championship would be the perfect way to cap off another strong summer on the diamond.

"It would mean everything," said Michel.

"Every single guy on this team has been grinding every single day, so we're used to grinding, but it's nice to get something out of the grind, lets put it that way."

Michael will enter Saturday night's game with a 3-0 record, and 2.23 ERA.

First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
