MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (WGEM) -- James Vandenberg's hopes of making the Minnesota Vikings roster took a step in the right direction on Friday night.

The Keokuk native and University of Iowa alum completed all three of his pass attempts during the fourth quarter of the Vikings' 27-13 preseason opening loss to the Houston Texans.

Vandenberg saw action in Minnesota's final two drives connecting with wide receiver Erik Highsmith on his first NFL pass for six yards.

He then completed consecutive passes to running back Jerodis Williams (seven yards) and tight end Colin Anderson (five yards) on the team's final possession.

Both drives ended with punts.

Vandenberg, who's in contention for Minnesota's third string quarterback with McLeod Bethel-Thompson, threw for a total 18 yards.

Vandenberg and the Vikings continue the preseason next Friday (August 16) at Buffalo.
