House boat in Quincy sinks after hitting pole

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -

A house boat in Quincy sank this weekend after striking a jagged pole in the Mississippi River.

Gina Wiley and Scott Tomlinson say their boat started sinking Saturday night around 8 p.m. near Kessler Park.

Wiley said Sunday afternoon that their next step would be to pull the boat out of the water.

Boaters we spoke to say there are many hazards in this stretch of the Mississippi River and there's been multiple accidents.

One says there needs to be more done to make sure this doesn't happen again.

"They need to be removed out of the water so obviously all the boaters can enjoy the lower bay not just people that know the lower bay. These people have been here for less than a month and didn't have any idea that the abandoned jagged pole was seven inches below the water," said Bill Brown who helped the couple with their sinking boat.

A boater actually put this buoy up Sunday in order to warn other boaters about the pole.
