WIU officials remind students to be safe this semester

Class is back in session at Western Illinois University, and public safety officials want to remind students to make safety a priority.

Director of Public Safety Scott Harris says they start focusing on important safety tips in the beginning of the year - like locking dorm rooms, and walking in groups at night, even if it's just around campus.

But he says they're also working on making their safety information as public as they possibly can."One campus they have five new boards, electronic boards, that we're going to start using to put some information on that. We're putting Crimestoppers text-a-tip information on every floor," he says.

Harris says campus security is also working alongside Macomb Police to protect students who live in off-campus apartments.
