QUINCY, Il. (WGEM) -- For as much success as the Quincy High volleyball team had last season, 34 wins to be exact, they weren't able to get past Springfield in the regional semifinals.

The goal in 2013, despite the loss of a talented senior class, is for victories in the regular season as well as the postseason.

The Blue Devils are hard at work trying to make sure they're ready for both.

Head coach Barb Crist says it's up to a pair of veterans and several newcomers to make sure that happens.

"Losing five seniors that have been playing since they were freshman and sophomores and then really only have Monica and MJ coming back for the most part, the younger girls have really stepped up," Crist told WGEM Sports.

"They're coming in full force and playing really, really well."

"They were a little scared like we were when we were freshman and sophomores, but I think they've stepped up and they're taking on the role," added senior Monica Bumbry.

Confidence is sure to carry a Quincy High group used to winning, and winning a lot.

Senior M.J. Garkie says the goal is squarely set on more success in the postseason.

"One of my teachers asked me today, 'Are you going to be better than last year?," senior Garkie expressed.

"If we win one regional game we're going to be better than last year. I don't care about other games, it's just regionals"

"I don't think anybody is expecting us to be that good, but I know we can be as good as what I know we can," Bumbry added.

"They are striving as a team now to come out and give it everything they can because they want to get past postseason and they have the ability to do so," said Crist.

The Blue Devils season begins later this week when Chatham-Glenwood pays a visit on Thursday.
