An increase in female inmates has caused overcrowding at the Lee County Jail and an expansion project is set to start soon.
The $450,000 addition will add more cells to the existing space available on the second level.
Sheriff Jim Sholl says the expansion will alleviate the issue they're experiencing with more female inmates.
"With female you can't mix them with male inmates. Law require sight and sound separation, so it's hard to shuffle females into another cell block that's not designed for them and still try to maintain that sight and sound separation," said Sheriff Jim Sholl.
Sholl says the expansion should be finished by December.
