(WGEM) -- Western Illinois University junior defensive back Dallas Nichols has been named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Newcomer of the Week following the Leathernecks 42-9 season opening win over Hampton on Thursday.
In his Leatherneck debut, Nichols burst on to the scene with a 97-yard interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter, breaking a school record dating back to 1984.
The interception return was also the eighth longest in MVFC history.
Nichols defensive impact went beyond the record setting touchdown.
He also recovered a fumble, recorded five tackles, including a tackle for loss.
As a team, the Leathernecks forced nine turnovers (six interceptions/three fumbles), three of which were returned for touchdowns.
Western Illinois (1-0) will host Quincy University (0-0) in it's next contest on Saturday, September 7.
Kickoff at Hanson Field is scheduled for 1-o'clock p.m.
