MACOMB, Ill. (WGEM) -

Fall enrollment at Western Illinois University dropped four percent this year.

Total enrollment is 11,707, about 500 less than last year.

New freshmen enrollment is also down about six percent from last fall.

University officials cite the declining number of high school graduates and an increasingly competitive market, but say they are seeing increases in the average ACT scores and high school GPA for incoming freshmen.
