QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -

Police say a Pikeland Community School District bus driver purposely steered a bus into a tree to avoid a collision in Quincy on Monday morning.

Officers say 43-year-old Matt Davidsmeyer told police he was driving a Pikeland bus to a repair shop for emission work when the brakes went out. He then steered the bus into a tree in order to avoid a collision.

The accident happened between Fifth and Sixth Streets in Quincy just after 9:30 a.m. Quincy police on the scene say no kids were on the bus at the time and the driver was not injured.

Davidsmeyer was not ticketed.
