Quincy public pools see all-time low attendance numbers for 2013

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -

The numbers are out, and they're not good for the Quincy park district when it comes to pool attendance this summer.

Indian Mounds and Wavering Aquatic Center saw the lowest attendance numbers on record this summer at just under 19,000 people.

Park District officials say pool use was down more than 10,000 people from last year, the biggest one year plunge since records began in 1940.

Officials say there are several factors to blame for the decline besides weather.

"I think over the last couple of years, more things in the whole pool environment have changed. The Kroc Center wasn't here several years ago, you see a lot more people with neighborhood pools in their backyards and those type of things," said Mike Bruns, the Program Services Director for the Park District.

Mike Bruns says the park district is discussing numerous ways to increase attendance next year, including lowering the price of admissions and offering more promotional days.

Wavering averaged 115 swimmers per day this year and was closed four times. Last year, Wavering averaged 182 swimmers and was closed twice.

Indian Mounds, which was open about two weeks longer than Wavering, averaged 119 swimmers per day, and was closed four days. Last year, Indian Mounds averaged 180 swimmers and was closed five times.

Bruns also says depending on what the park district decides to do with Wavering Aquatic Center, (See Future of Wavering Aquatic Center Up in the Air) that could also affect numbers as well.
