Quincy soccer game raises money for Great River Honor Flight

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -- Thursday night's soccer match between Quincy Senior High and Quincy Notre Dame was more than your typical cross town showdown.

It was a patriotic night at Flinn Stadium.  Parents of QHS soccer players organized a night dedicated to veterans with all money raised going to Great River Honor Flight.  Pre game festivities included the QHS marching band, a parade of new recruits, and a special balloon release followed by a moment of silence.

This is the third year parents have organized a night to raise funds for a specific cause in the community.

Organizer Tanya Mero says, "We were just talking about how we can give back to the community.  We've done it for the last two years and Great River Honor Flight came up and it just resonated with everybody so that's why we wanted to do this."

The event also featured a silent auction, 50/50 raffle and T-shirt sale.  The goal was to raise $5,000.
