Hannibal Sidewalk construction almost complete

After about a year of construction, Hannibal city officials and business owners can see the light at the end of the tunnel with the sidewalk project.  The last phase will start Monday on the 100 block of Main Street.

Construction just finished up on the 200 block of Main Street meaning there's only one block left to go before sidewalk construction is complete.  Debbie Churchill, who walks through downtown Hannibal regularly, is already noticing the difference.

"The sidewalks are wider and there not quite as crumbled up as what they were before. It's nice that a family can walk all the way together instead of being crunched up because I remember it was crunched up before," she said.
Linda Studer owns the Mississippi Market Place in downtown Hannibal.  The store has only been open for five months, meaning Studer has seen construction since the beginning.  She's excited the work is finished on her block and says now she hopes a better appearance can bring in more business.

"Since we've been here through the whole construction, perhaps business has been busier for other folks in the past. So we haven't gotten to experience that high expectation," she said.

City Engineer Mark Rees has been with the project since the beginning and said progress has come a long way.  However, there's other things to finish outside the sidewalk, such as paving the road and making curbs handicapped accessible.  That means there's going to be a last surge of activity before the project ends.

"Activity will pick up on the project here in the next few weeks. And with any luck by the end of October we'll be able to wrap it up," Rees said.

Rees says construction will be out of the way during the Folk Life Festival which starts on October 19th.   He said if there not finished at that time, they will be very close.
