Authorities say the Newcomb Hotel fire was apparently accidental

Authorities say the blaze that destroyed Quincy's historic Newcomb Hotel could have been started accidentally.

Mathew Clark, 24, made his first court appearance Tuesday morning at the Adams Courthouse where he was formally charged.

According to court documents, Clark is charged with burglary and criminal damage to property in excess of $100,000.

Authorities say Clark was in the old hotel looking for scrap metal and accidentally set the fire.

If convicted, he faces seven years in prison. He also could be fined up to the amount of the damages incurred from the blaze.
