AUGUSTA, Ill. (WGEM) -- A Suns Classic tournament title in their back pocket and nine straight wins to begin the season, it's safe to say Southeastern volleyball coach Tim Kerr couldn't have imagined a better start.

The Lady Suns have mixed together a solid group of returning players with a talented crop of young players, including freshman Kolby McClelland, to a perfect beginning to the fall campaign.

Kerr says the blending of the two groups has been relatively seamless.

"Our young kids are the buzz right now but we've got a bunch of veteran kids that have played a lot of varsity volleyball, and are very accepting," Kerr exclaimed.

"It's just been exciting to watch the groups together. They really have meshed well together and they compliment each other very well."

Senior middle blocker Kara Twaddell wasn't sure they would develop cohesion at such a quick pace.

"With the freshman coming in and probably being nervous, I figured they would be hard pressed to get connected with such older and younger (players)," Twaddell said.

"But (the learning curve) has definitely been a lot quicker than I thought and a lot better."

No matter the season and no matter the personnel Kerr always gets the best out of his team.

Recently, the veteran skipper won his 400th career match and the success in Augusta doesn't seem to be slowing down, and the players feel blessed to have Kerr as their leader.

"It's been great. I couldn't have asked for a better coach and he knows what he's doing," Twaddell said.

"We know to listen to him and he's just a fun, great coach."

According to Kerr, "We have a good tradition of winning, competing, and having a nice program.

I think our kids buy into that and they're expected to be competitive, and lot of times they're better than they should be just because of that."

The Lady Suns will try for 10 consecutive wins on Wednesday night when they play host to Macomb before a trip to Western on Thursday.
