The victim of a shooting in Fort Madison Monday around 3:00 p.m. has now been identified.
25 year-old Matthew Richards Griffiths is recovering at an Iowa City hospital.
Police say they still don't know who the shooter is, and neighbors are worried about their safety.
Erica Cowles was on her way to pick up her son at Lincoln Elementary School when she says she heard sirens.
"I had just stepped outside before the shooting had taken place and then I had heard the siren," said Cowles.
Then, her dad texted her to let her know about a shooting on the 1400 block between Avenue F and Avenue G.
Cowles says that's when she started to panic.
"I was very worried. I had went and informed the school about the shooting," said Cowles.
Officials with the Fort Madison Police Department say the shooting happened in an alley and their biggest concern was Lincoln Elementary School that sits just a block away that was letting kids out the same time as the shooting.
"The time that it happened was probably one of the worst times that it could have happened for us," said Fort Madison Police Chief Bruce Niggemeyer.
Niggemeyer says if the shooting would have happened during school hours, they could have put the school on lockdown.
"The fact that school was letting out had that been a little earlier or later it would have been better because we could have made a phone call to the school. They would have went into their emergency response," said Niggemeyer.
Officials say no children were harmed, but for parents like Cowles she says it's unnerving to know something like this can happen so close to home.
"With the shooting that had gone on literally almost in our backyard it kind of surprised me because you would think Fort Madison would be a very safe place to live," said Cowles.
