Hannibal still trying to collect business renewal fees

HANNIBAL, Mo. (WGEM) -

The clock is ticking for Hannibal businesses to renew their license with the city.

Thirty businesses have yet to pay their merchant's license despite numerous reminders from the city.  Those fees were due in late June.  The city is giving them 30 more days.  If nothing happens by the then, the city will shut down their store.  If there's no store, the city will take other action.

"If they see them out doing business, the police will issue a citation at that point because as you said they don't have a physical business to lock," city collector Phyllis Nelson said.

This will be the first year the city has the authority to shut down businesses that don't pay the fee, which ranges from $40 to $100 a year.
