Abused children typically tell seven different adults about their situation before it's reported to the authorities and the state of Illinois is hoping to change that.
The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is launching a new ad campaign called "You Are Not Alone," encouraging children to pick up the phone and report when they or someone they know is the victim of abuse.
Posters will go up in area schools because officials say they want kids to know that someone is there who can help.
"If they're being abused or neglected, if they're being harmed then it will get better if they make the phone call," said Morey McClean, a Child Protection Supervisor with DCFS. "It won't get worse."
McClean stresses that child abuse happens everywhere.
