A West Point, Iowa man is dead after officials say he went around a barricade just before 11:30 a.m. Friday.

Lee County Sheriff James Sholl said 66-year-old Clifford Jerome Hermes was driving West  on Chalkridge Road in an SUV when he crashed.

Sholl said the road was closed at the intersection of 265th Avenue, but that Hermes drove around the barricade and rolled his vehicle in the ditch. Sholl said Hermes was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene.
